1981: The first London Marathon was run this day in 1981 [BBC News].  6,700 participants took to the 26 mile route from Greenwich Park to Buckingham Palace.  American Dick Beardsley and Norwegian Inge Simonsen both won the race, crossing the tape hand in hand.
